President of the Australian Human Rights Commission, the Hon. Catherine Branson QC will deliver her vision for a fairer Australia at this Friday's Don Dunstan Human Rights Oration in Adelaide at 7pm.

Ms Branson will return to her alma mater, the University of Adelaide, for the annual lecture that has drawn appreciative crowds each year since its inception in 2003.

The former Federal Court Judge was appointed President of the Australian Human Rights Commission in August, succeeding the Chancellor of the University of Adelaide, the Hon. John von Doussa, who held the post from 2004-2008.

Another alumnus, the late Dame Roma Mitchell, was the inaugural head of the Human Rights Commission in 1986. All studied Law at the University of Adelaide.

Prior to her appointment as a judge, Ms Branson practised as a barrister at the Adelaide Bar in South Australia, principally in the areas of administrative law, including discrimination law and commercial law. She was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1992.

The Don Dunstan Foundation honours the legacy of the former South Australian premier, regarded as one of the most visionary politicians in Australia's history.

The Foundation promotes progressive leadership and a fairer, more tolerant society by furthering debate and action on key public policy issues. The Oration grew out of a partnership between the late Don Dunstan and the then Australian NGO Community Aid Abroad (now Oxfam Australia).
